The US Army invades a small Connecticut town in this Cold War farce from bestselling humorist Max Shulman

Harry Bannerman drinks his nightly bourbon on the train from New York City to Putnam’s Landing, Connecticut. A typical commuter, he has a bald spot, a house, two mortgages, three children, and a wife who is a committed soccer mom and pillar of the community. Harry just wants to curl up on the couch with Grace when he gets home, but instead faces an endless round of PTA meetings, political rallies, little league games, and amateur theatricals.

Second Lt. Guido di Maggio loves baseball less than his last name implies and his fiancée, Maggie Larkin, more than the army allows. College sweethearts, the couple has their future all mapped out Guido will complete his military service in Maryland while Maggie starts her teaching career in Putnam’s Landing, a five-hour train ride away. But when Guido is reassigned to Alaska and Maggie loses her job for giving a sex talk to second graders, their plans go up in smoke.

To avoid Alaska and save his relationship with Maggie, Guido takes the thankless job directing public relations at a new anti-aircraft base in Putnam’s Landing. What happens next in this national bestseller is a dark and funny story of the disaffected and disconnected in Cold War suburbia as tensions mount between the “invading” army (“invading” Connecticut, that is) and a bevy of local teenagers; between frustrated commuters and their frustrated wives; between social do-gooders and Yankee conservatives; and between romantic dreams of the artist’s life in New York and the pedestrian reality of having to earn a living to house and feed a growing family.

Rally Round the Flag Boys! A Novel edition by Max Shulman Literature Fiction eBooks

To all you young'uns, as a seventy-three -year-old-man, take it from me because I lived it, this is a brilliant satire on an era of staunch, Republican conformity. Harry Bannermann's and Grace's plight is typical of the upwardly mobile man and wife who get swept up in the American dream and, while totally overwhelmed by its demands, learn to compromise and survive its "success."

Comfort Goodpasture (that's her name!) is a typical teenager of the era, obsessed with Elvis and James Dean, who, in spite of her cluelessness to reality, eventually shows a wisdom perhaps learned her Puritan upbringing. Her relation with her straight-laced father is truly touching.

Every character is three-dimensional and while the end gets farcical, it's a great romp in the somewhat absurdity of life in America at the time.

Succumb to the language, it's basically real.

Max Shulman, a master satirist, wrote another funny, spot-on book, satirizing American life of the mid fifties.

Rally Round the Flag Boys! A Novel edition by Max Shulman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This pocket book was delivered speedily and in excellent condition for its age. I would buy from this company again.
read it in the fifty's, and wanted to read it again. It is a very funny book.
Funny from the get go. Worth it.
Very enjoyable and amusing novel. None of it is to be taken seriously.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. The characters are hilarious. The plot is hilarious. It's just missing any redeeming social value.
Max Shulman was a genius at writing very funny books about sex without getting dirty. I loved his Dobie Gillis book, and this one is even better than that. It's a twisted, convoluted plot full of the most illogical coincidences, but it never fails to be fun to read and funny. Shulman's prose is quick and precise. Imagine a more literate but still concise Stephen King minus the monsters. A great book, a fun read and if the dummies in Hollywood would get their thumbs out from where the sun don't shine, we might actually be able to watch the great movie based on this book, too. This book is readily available in both hardback and paperback on eBay.
After the Benchley-esque surrealism of the author's "Barefoot Boy with Cheek," this novel is a welcome change. Though just as insightful and humorous, it's more grounded in a relatable reality, being the society I grew up in and which has, sadly, passed away. Schulman skewers that society on a satiric barb, but in highlighting its foibles and shortcomings he demonstrates why it was such a golden age. Reading the book from a vantage point of sixty years brings a touch of wistful melancholy to the humor, but I still managed to get smiles and quite a few laughs from the antics of the novel's iconic characters.
